Knowing that defective ready-mixed concrete can harden into a memorial due to carelessness and ignorance, the NPC Concrete teams at the company’s six KwaZulu-Natal plants take a scientific approach to their product. Not only are there laboratory testing facilities at each concrete plant, but each operation is under the watchful eye of the NPC Central Services Laboratory in Durban where research and development also takes place.
SARMA and ASPASA Awards
The company’s commitment to excellence has been recognised with high level awards in SARMA audits (Southern African Readymix Association) at each of its operations. Quarrying industry ASPASA awards have also been won by sister company, NPC Aggregate, whose quarrying operations support NPC Concrete plants regionally with quality aggregates, graded according to SABS standards.
NPC Central Laboratory scores 100% in Audit
Leading the way, the NPC Central Services Laboratory South earned the highest distinction possible with a Platinum Plus Award in the 2008 SARMA audit. NPC Concrete Technologist Rolf Schutte, who heads the Central Laboratory in addition to overseeing the product quality testing operations at the individual NPC Concrete plants, says the award reflects the company’s passion for quality assurance and its many years in the building products industry: “To achieve this rating, a SARMA accredited laboratory has to receive at least a 95% score when audited against a stringent list of requirements. In the 2008 audit, our NPC Central Laboratory achieved a mark of 100%, well in excess of the 95% minimum requirement.”
Benefits of SARMA Compliance
NPC Aggregate and Concrete Managing Director Avi Bhoora sees compliance with SARMA and ASPASA ideals as beneficial to all concerned. “Voluntary compliance assures our clients that industry standards are in place and it indicates our responsible approach to human resources, quality and the environment.” In the 2008 audit, four of the NPC Concrete plants earned the SARMA Platinum Award, and two plants earned Gold Awards. Mr Bhoora congratulates his team on their accomplishments: “I’m glad to see that that we’ve moved even higher from the previous audit when all plants achieved GOLD status. Keep it up.”
NPC Aggregate
Aggregate comprises a significant percentage of ready mixed concrete, emphasising the role of quality quarry products in the modern construction and road-building industries. Quality standards are essential to the operations of NPC Aggregate, with quarries at Sterkspruit in the Hillcrest region as well as Margate and Marburg, on the KZN South Coast.
NPC Aggregate, in a BEE partnership, has garnered its share of industry recognition. Margate Quarry, with a considerable history of high-scoring ASPASA audits, attained the prized ASPASA Five Shields Award along with nearby Marburg quarry. The company’s Sterkspruit Quarry achieved the ASPASA Four Shield Award.
