Empowerment deal brings diversification to NPC tipper truck fleet

The extensive expansion of facilities at NPC’s Margate Quarry includes a Black Empowerment component.  Faced with the need to grow the NPC Aggregate tipper fleet, MD Avi Bhoora opened discussions with Bongmusa Holdings (Pty) Ltd, a 100% black-owned transport company which was already providing staff transport services to other NPC plants.

“Impressed with their flexibility and willingness to diversify, we entered a two month trial period with Bongmusa Holdings during which they transported aggregates for us in two subcontracted tippers.  The trial showed us the workability of the plan and a decision was taken to enter into a contract based upon the purchase of two new vehicles.

“Since our current fleet is composed of both 6-cubic metre tippers and 20-cubic metre articulated tippers, we decided to diversify with one of the Bongmusa units, which has been ordered as a 10-cubic metre truck.  This suits the market at the moment, which includes an increasing number of larger construction projects.  With this mid-size unit we will be better able to serve the larger project which for reasons of limited site access or road restrictions may be unable to accept delivery in our 20-cubic metre articulated units,” Mr Bhoora says.

Musa Ngcongo, CEO of Bongmusa Holdings, says that the NPC contract represents both diversification and growth for the family company in which his brother BongiNkosi shares ownership.  “While subcontracted tippers were used late last year during the trial period it became clear to us that NPC’s customers would be better served by newer more reliable vehicles. The second of the two new Mercedes-powered units is a six cubic metre tipper and we expect them to be delivered within the next three to six weeks,” Mr Ngcongo says.

The two trucks provided through this BEE contract will be painted in the blue and white NPC colours and will bring the NPC Aggregate delivery fleet total up to 12 trucks.  This figure includes both the units currently on the road and additional trucks on order.  The NPC Concrete mixer truck fleet is also being expanded.

NPC Aggregate MD Avi Bhoora with Musa Ngcongo, CEO of Bongmusa Holdings, which in an empowerment deal, is supplying and operating two tipper trucks in the Margate Quarry-based NPC Aggregate truck fleet.
