Margate Quarry scores high on enviro audit
These days, quarries are not just places where one can mine, crush and sell aggregate as you please. Government regulations require quarry management to follow approved strategies for operating in a safe manner and to preserve employee health within the quarry environment. An industry self-regulatory body known as the ASPASA (Aggregate and Sand Producers Association of Southern Africa) also plays a significant role.
ASPASA completes comprehensive audits of its members to see how well they are complying with good environmental practice. Each quarry is then rated individually for the way the environment is managed. Margate Quarry, which has been an ASPASA member for some years and is the home of NPC Aggregate and NPC Concrete, has won the highly placed 5 Fish Eagles Award for environmental management.
The quarry was also audited in ASPASA’s health and safety programme known as ISHE (Initiating Safety, Health and Education), where shields are awarded in a similarly constructed evaluation scheme. Once again Margate Quarry did well by winning 5 Shields.
NPC Aggregate and NPC Concrete Managing Director Avi Bhoora says, “Maintaining a safe working environment is important to us, as is conservation of our beautiful valley. Our Marburg Quarry has also been audited and has received a 4 Fish Eagle ASPASA Award. From our perspective, the effort and expense involved for the benefit of our employees and our natural resources is worth it. Customers who purchase our products are also supporting our voluntary environmental and health and safety programmes and we appreciate their support.”
